Yuukei Yesterday I (夕景イエスタデイI Yūkei Iesutadei I) is the tenth chapter of the Kagerou Daze manga.
Summary[]
- Inside a classroom, Takane is standing in front of two desks and listens to an announcement on the radio. She learns that by the end of the day the Earth will come to an end. Takane, crouched in the corner of the room, holds her head while panels of a flock of birds flying under the crescent moon and a group of people running past a pile of debris are depicted. While she trembles out of fear and is about to give in to despair, she realizes a voice is calling out to her from her headphones. It first asks if she can hear it, then urges her to move as she still has something she needs to tell someone. As she brushes away her tears and stands up, the voice, which she recognizes as her own, instructs her to climb on a specific hill where she will finally see what it is talking about. She proceeds to run through the school hallway as the voice asks her if she wants to survive.
- Jolting awake from her sleep, she becomes increasingly irritated by the clatter coming from her schoolmates working on their booths for the school festival outside. With the festival being one week away, Takane complains she cannot take a nap due to the noise. She has no interest in the festival, as she thinks it's a pointless charade where people that usually bicker with each other suddenly act friendly, and how at the end of it all only a pile of garbage will be left behind. Since she is in a special class with a total of only two students, they are not able to make a booth of their own.
- Her thoughts are interrupted when someone opens the classroom door. To her surprise, she is greeted by her classmate Haruka who is wearing nothing but his boxers. With his wet uniform in hand, he explains that he fell into a fountain when he was trying to pet a cat. Takane, flustered by his appearance, yells at him to put some clothes on, to which Haruka complains that his clothes have not dried yet. When he moves closer to show the wet apparel to her, she becomes even more flustered. Yanking the clothes from his grip, she forces him to put his clothes back on while complaining internally about how calm he is acting compared to her.
- At that moment, the door opens up and their teacher enters the room. Before he can finish asking what the two of them are yelling about, he becomes aware of the compromising position his students are in and drops the notebook he was holding previously. When he attempts to leave, he is stopped by Takane, who hurriedly explains the situation and questions why he is even trying to run away from them. Finally realizing what the situation is, he laughs and explains that his initial thought was that the pair could not restrain themselves anymore, so he tried to pretend that he had no idea what was happening. Takane complains about how awful he is and then asks him to help her get some clothes on Haruka or she will call the principal. Twitching at the word "principal", Kenjirou swiftly dresses his student. With a sigh, he promises to find a dry jersey for Haruka later, but for now tells them to sit down.
- With the two of them seated, he tries to recall what he was going to tell his students but is unable to, which causes Takane to shout at him. Hitting his fist against his palm in revelation, he asks them what they are going to make for the upcoming festival. Takane reacts to that with confusion since he had previously told them that it would be fine if they didn't do anything. Kenjirou admits that the previous week when the principal had asked him what his class was going to do for the festival, he told him that it was a special surprise to impress him. This makes Takane panic since they only have a week left to make a booth. When Haruka suggests that they make a shooting gallery, she complains internally about how it would take too long to set it up.
- She continues thinking to herself; how they are doomed if their booth ends up advertised in the school flyers, how their class is special since both of the students have an illness, and how she already doesn't have friends due to her sleep issues surrounding her illness which causes her to be irritable so she doesn't want people to give her weirder looks than they already do if they fail. Kenjirou awkwardly attempts to calm her down, so he offers to collaborate with them on the booth.
- Remembering that each class gets a budget for their booth, she asks her teacher about it. This causes Kenjirou to wince and he starts to sweat nervously. He averts his eyes from his student to a nearby glass cabinet, which Takane notices. She follows his gaze and notices a fish specimen, which Kenjirou expressed earlier that he wanted but didn't have the funds to buy it. Quickly piecing things together, she asks him about the specimen, and then if he had spent all of their budget on it. He breaks down from the pressure of her questioning and admits that, although he had given up on ever buying it, he gave in and bought it when he saw it was on sale.
- While Kenjirou continues to justify himself, Haruka chimes in wondering what they should do now and how he would still like to do a shooting gallery. Takane opposes this, saying that it would be too expensive since their teacher had spent their entire budget. With a solemn look, he explains that it would be a great idea since none of the other classes were doing it. This surprises Takane, and she asks if he is looking forward to the festival since he hadn't spoken up when they were told they wouldn't be doing anything. He admits that the reason for that is that he didn't want to be a burden if he suddenly collapsed during the preparations. For a moment, she thinks about Haruka's condition, how even the slightest attack could lead to his death, and how she had never realized the gravity of his illness because of his carefree attitude.
- His hesitation about making the booth irritates Takane, so she erupts and tells him that she will help him. Her outburst leaves him shivering as she redirects her attention to her teacher. She orders him to withdraw some money for them and then declares that they will have to give out his new specimen as the prize. When Kenjirou attempts to make an objection to this, he quickly gives in at the mention of the principal. As she mentally makes notes on what will be necessary for the booth, Haruka tries to get her attention. Looking at him directly, she reassures him that they will succeed no matter what.
