Black snakes with deep red eyes grow from Azami's head as her hair, which is a typical feature of a Medusa,[1][2][3][4] but ten with abilities were her most significant.[5][6][7][8] These snakes were created from Azami's strong feelings and are manifestations of her instinctive wishes.[9][10][11] Each snake has a set of supernatural abilities that it grants to its owner to help fulfill a specific wish; acting towards this wish is the reason for each snake's existence.[9][10][12][13] Most of her snakes are solely driven by their drive to fulfill wishes and have no sentience beyond that primal urge,[9][10] with the exception of the Snake of Clearing Eyes, which is the snake that gave Azami the idea of creating the Kagerou Daze,[5][8][9][14] and Konoha.[13][15][16][17] The snake created by Marry, the Snake of Retaining Eyes, is also fully sentient.[18][19] The snakes have been shown to be able to talk to their future and current owners in the Kagerou Daze itself,[20][21][22][23] and sometimes in the real world too.[24][25][26][27][28][29] Their size and appearance vary across scenes, sometimes looking like normal-sized snakes, others like giant snakes, assuming human shape, and even as disembodied voices.

Snakes can act as a surrogate replacement for a person's life.[6][8][14] When Shion and Marry were murdered by humans, Azami ordered the Kagerou Daze to swallow them just before their last breaths, since in the Kagerou Daze time does not flow properly. Azami then gave Marry the Snake of Combining Eyes, also known as the "Queen Snake", so she would be able to return alive to the real world. However, this caused Azami to lose control of the Kagerou Daze, and it continued her order to swallow up people who die on the day Shion and Marry did, August 15.[4][6][30] To follow the "Queen Snake" that is now in the real world, the snakes began to leave the Kagerou Daze through the bodies of humans who entered it with a strong wish that was compatible enough, and thus could be fulfilled, with their abilities.[6][8][31]

It is implied that a snake can leave its owner's body, thus killing them, if its owner's wish can no longer be fulfilled by its abilities, be it because the wish has been completely fulfilled or by other circumstances, and if its owner has no other strong wishes that it can fulfill.[13][32] Even when the owner's loss of interest in their wish does not get to that extreme, snakes do not like when their owners do not indulge in their wishes, as those are their sustenance, and will thus goad them into acting upon it, even if it brings suffering to their owner.[9][10][12] In the case of sentient snakes, completely granting a wish with no other to fill the gap can make them "disappear".[13][16][18][33][34]

Azami's Snakes[]

Snake Information First Appearance Image
The Snake of Combining Eyes (目を合体せる蛇 Me wo Awaseru Hebi)[5][6]

Also referred to as the "Queen Snake",[5][8][21] or even the "goddess".[23] Unlike all other snakes, it is depicted as a glowing, golden snake.[4]

This snake was created by Azami's wish to have a place to understand who she is. Thus, it is responsible for the creation of the real world.[33]

Combining Eyes has reality-altering powers, which has been used both to create the Kagerou Daze out of Azami's wish to stay with her family forever,[1][6][28][35] and to rewind the world at the end of each Route, out of Marry's wish to be with her friends once again.[4][5][9][10][36][37][38][39]

Its presence keeps all of the other snakes under control, allowing their powers to be used to their full extent in a rational manner even when the owner does not have a strong wish specifically fitting any of the other snakes under their possession.[3][4][10]

It was directly given by Azami to Marry Kozakura to save her life.[4][6][30] Both Marry and Shion were only compatible with Combining Eyes, which is why Azami could only return one of them to the real world.[6][30]

Act 10: Kuusou Forest (Mekakucity Actors) Act 10 - Azami 11
The Snake of Clearing Eyes (目が冴える蛇 Me ga Saeru Hebi)[7][40]

This snake was created from Azami's wish to understand who she is.[33]

Because Azami stopped having the wish that created it after meeting Tsukihiko, it devised a scheme to destroy and rewind the world.[33] Its plans include: exploiting Azami's wish to be with her family forever[25][28][29] by making her create the Kagerou Daze;[1][6][28][35] later goading Azami to give Marry the Snake of Combining Eyes[4][6][30] so that the snakes could follow it back to the real world;[6][8][41] and lastly, turning Marry into the new Medusa and forcing her to rewind the world by killing the Mekakushi Dan, an event known as the "Tragedy", and thus making her wish to be with her friends once again.[5][9][10][13][36][37][39][42]

Unlike other snakes, the Snake of Clearing Eyes' compatibility with a person does not depend on their specific wish but rather the intensity of emotion behind it. As long as its host currently has a wish with strong enough emotions behind it, the Snake of Clearing Eyes can be their snake.[9][19] In all of its owners, it exists through their strongest wish and possesses their bodies to both act towards their wish and its plan.[8][9][14][19][40][43] It avoids completely fulfilling their wish to prevent itself from losing sentience.[9][13][34]

This snake is owned by Kenjirou Tateyama (Music, Manga Route 1, Novel, Mekakucity Actors Routes), who wished to see his deceased wife again,[14][19][40] Hibiya Amamiya (Manga Route 2), who wished to save Hiyori,[44] and, supposedly, Hiyori Asahina (Mekakucity Actors), who wished to be alive and out of the Kagerou Daze.[13] It ends up possessing Konoha in every Route and using Awakening Eyes to change it appearance and give itself superhuman strength, which it uses to carry out the "Tragedy".[5][13][45][46][47]

In the Anime Route, it is implied that when the Snake of Clearing Eyes was forced to grant Konoha's wish to save Hiyori, it went to her body to grant her a new life outside of the Kagerou Daze, and it "disappeared" due to the simplicity of her wish.[13]

The Snake of Concealing Eyes (目を隠す蛇 Me wo Kakusu Hebi)[48][49]

This snake is among those created from Azami's fear towards humans who persecuted her,[10][11] and it was used by her primarily for self-defense.[4]

This snake is owned by Tsubomi Kido, who felt out of place when adopted into the Kido residence and wished to disappear.[9][50][51] In the novels, the Snake of Concealing Eyes goes to Kido without Azami initially realizing so, and it is implied that this is the first snake to leave the Kagerou Daze after Combining Eyes.[30]

The Snake of Stealing Eyes (目を盗む蛇 Me wo Nusumu Hebi)[7][52]

This snake was created from Azami's wish to understand the thoughts of other living beings.[53][54]

This snake is owned by Kousuke Seto, who wished to understand the thoughts of others and his dog companion.[10][52] In Manga Route 2, this snake appears to Seto on the day he meets Marry when he ponders about the cruelty of the outside world and the people who lived in it, which he can see through its abilities.[55]

This snake is owned by Shuuya Kano, who wished to be able to hide his injuries inflicted by his mother.[12][22] During Kano's stay in the Kagerou Daze, it mockingly told him to abandon his "pure, umblemished heart" and start "deceiving" others.[12][22]

This snake is owned by Momo Kisaragi, who wished that people would pay attention to her instead of her prodigious brother.[10][57]

Act 12: Summertime Record (Mekakucity Actors) Act 12 - Momo 02
The Snake of Opening Eyes (目が覚める蛇 Me ga Sameru Hebi)[26][58]

This snake is apparently among those created from Azami's fear towards humans who persecuted her[10][11] and was primarily used to allow Azami to stay alive when her body was unavailable.[30]

A distinguishing feature of this snake is it has three large, hexagon-like scales that start on the top of its head and go down its neck. It has three, bar-like scales from the first hexagon to each of its eyes.[24]

This snake is owned by Takane Enomoto, who wished to no longer have the need to eat or sleep in most Routes.[59][60] In Manga Route 2, it is implied that her wish instead was to run away from her problems, which she later stopped having thanks to Shintaro and Momo.[32] After Takane left the Kagerou Daze and lost her connection to her physical body, the snake spoke abrasively to her and told her to "open her eyes".[24][26] According to the novels, Azami gave this snake herself to Takane, and, once she did so, she was on the verge of "disappearing".[61]

The Snake of Focusing Eyes (目を凝らす蛇 Me wo Korasu Hebi)[62]

This snake is among those created from Azami's fear towards humans who persecuted her,[10][11] and it was primarily used by her for self-defense.[2][3][4]

This snake is owned by Hibiya Amamiya, who wished to find Hiyori,[35][62][63] (Music, Novel, Mekakucity Actors Routes) and Hiyori Asahina, who apparently wished to find Hibiya (Manga Route 2).[46] Both of them are compatible with this snake, which is possibly why their experience in the Kagerou Daze consists of them in a deadly timeloop. This is usually the last snake to leave the Kagerou Daze, although in Manga Route 2 it leaves alongside the Snake of Clearing Eyes.[6][20][64][65][66][67]

It is implied that the Snake of Focusing Eyes talks to Hibiya during his time in the Kagerou Daze in the Music Route, taunting him and telling him that he's not dreaming.[20]

Act 12: Summertime Record (Mekakucity Actors) Act 12 - Marry 03
The Snake of Awakening Eyes (目を醒ます蛇 Me wo Samasu Hebi)[7][15]

This snake was created from Azami's wish to have a physical form.[2][54]

This snake went to Haruka Kokonose, who wished to have a healthy body to make friends with. However, he rejected the body that the snake made him, and in turn the body rejected him due to his "meager spirit", causing the Snake of Awakening Eyes and his body to return to the real world without him as Konoha.[9][15][23][29][68] In Mekakucity Actors, Azami seemingly gives the snake to Haruka herself,[29] while, in the Novel Route, the Snake of Awakening Eyes itself approaches Haruka instead.[23]

Originally, the Snake of Awakening Eyes has a single-minded personality that focuses on wishes and a straightforward, abrasive, and even deriding way of talking.[23] However, after becoming Konoha the snake forgets its origin and its personality changes because of Haruka's wish,[9][13][69] causing it to become passive, gentle, food-loving, and, above all else, caring about his friends.[7][67][70][71][72][73] Even when he remembers his true nature, Konoha does not mind "disappearing" by fully granting Haruka's (and his own) wish of keeping his friends safe,[13][16] which is implied to happen in Summertime Record and Mekakucity Actors.[13]

It is implied that Konoha enters the Kagerou Daze with Hibiya and Hiyori in every Route. In Konoha no Sekai Jijou's MV, Konoha is seen constantly reaching out to Hibiya and Hiyori to try saving them during their deadly time loop, but he never makes it in time. In the Novels, the Snake of Awakening Eyes' personality temporarily reverts back to its original snake-like one during this situation and it is able to talk to Haruka, who is momentarily reunited with his body but still unable to control it.[21]

The Snake of Favoring Eyes (目をかける Me wo Kakeru Hebi)[1][13]

This snake was created from Azami's wish to have her daughter, Shion, understand her love.[13][25]

This snake is owned by Ayano Tateyama. In most Routes, she wishes to obtain a snake and stay in the Daze to prevent them all from returning to the real world and creating a new, complete Medusa, which would result in the deaths of her family and friends.[14][19][74] In Manga Route 2, she instead wishes to learn the story of the Medusa and Marry's origins.[75] In the novels, Azami personally gave this snake to Ayano and then "disappeared" after doing so.[61]

Marry's Snakes[]

Snake Information First Appearance Image
The Snake of Retaining Eyes (目に焼き付ける蛇 Me ni Yakitsukeru Hebi)[19][70]

This snake was created in Manga Route 2 by Marry from Ayano's life, which was already replaced by the Snake of Favoring Eyes, and Marry's wish to remember past Routes and end the "Tragedy".[13][38][76]

Since this snake was once human, she is different from most snakes, with the exception of the Snake of Clearing Eyes and Konoha, in that she still has sentience.[18][19][27] She takes on both the appearance of Ayano Tateyama and of a black snake with red eyes.[19][45][77]
This snake was given directly by Marry to Shintaro Kisaragi at Ayano's request[38] and with his promise to Marry of "never to forget the Tragedy".[19] After Manga Route 2, she often talks to him in dreams[27][70][78] and after a Route has ended.[18][38][45][77][79] When Shintaro fully activates his ability, he can talk to her while awake.[19]

The Snake of Retaining Eyes believes that she will "disappear"[18] once the Tragedy is finally over.[13][71]

Notes[]

  • Although Locking Eyes allows Azami to turn other living beings into stone, it does not seem to be an ability that requires as a snake, and she likely gives this ability to her daughter genetically.[4][73][80][81] Shion could turn people into stone at a great cost of energy and health,[4][80][81] and her daughter Marry can instead temporarily paralyze anyone who looks into her eyes.[11][49][80][82]
  • The light novels have pages with black backgrounds and white text whenever someone is having a direct interaction with a snake (besides altered forms like Clearing Eyes' possessions or Konoha).[22][26][27][28]
