| Jinzou Enemy The story starts with Shintaro Kisaragi, an apathetic young adult, who accidentally spills coke over his keyboard, due to annoyance about the jests of Ene - a mysterious humanoid program that was sent to him through an anonymous mail, and who currently resides in his computer. Shintaro, who became a hikkikomori after the suicide of his best friend and therefore depends on his life on the computer, panics and orders Ene to look for a new keyboard on the internet. Unfortunately, due to the Obon Festival, it becomes impossible for him to order a new keyboard online. Shintaro now has to leave his house for the first time in two years. As he enters a nearby mall, something explodes and Shintaro becomes a hostage in a terrorist attack. As he is sitting with the other hostages, he encounters two strangely acting teenagers, who encourage him to think of a plan to escape. Shintaro manages to think of something, but needs a distraction - which is suddenly granted. The plan seems to succeed, as all of a sudden Shintaro is shot and collapses. |
| Kisaragi Attention Shintaro's little sister, Momo Kisaragi, is in a hurry to get to school, despite having left her house one hour early. As a popular idol, she fears that her fans might get in her way, and shortly before she manages to get a ride on a bus, her eyes turn red and all attention from the nearby crowd falls on her. Because of this, she again arrives late, meeting her teacher Kenjirou Tateyama in the hallway, whom she has a rather long talk about her bad grades with. Afterwards, she receives a call from her manager, who gives her one day off. During a few flashbacks of Momo's past, it is shown that her father is no longer around and that she won an art contest in elementary school. A manager of an idol company visited her and offered Momo a carrier as an idol, but her mother refused, as she was too young. However, during middle school her mother became sick, so eventually she decided to accept the idol job to support her family. As the flashbacks end, Momo finds a limited time offer advertisement from a store and decides to head there, but bumps into a young boy on her way, who happens to be on the way to the same store, yet has never been to this part of the city before. Momo offers to show him the way, as she again catches the attention of everyone around them. The crowd starts chasing the two of them and Momo has to leave the boy behind. In the end, she finds herself lost in some blind alley, where she is watched by a mysterious girl. |
| Mekakushi Code The episode is a link of the first episode to the second. The mysterious girl named Kido introduces herself to Momo, stating that she was sent to find her and that she is "just like her", referring to the strange ability to catch people's attention. She then uses her eye ability, the complete opposite of Momo's ability, to make herself invisible and gain Momo's trust with it. However, this scares Momo so much that she ends up fainting. When Momo wakes up, she finds herself in the hideout of the Mekakushi Dan, a group of teenagers who all possess an unique eye ability. Momo is asked to join them and eventually agrees to become a member of the Mekakushi Dan. Unfortunately, Marry, one of their members, trips over her own feet while carrying a tray with a few cups and something to drink, startling Momo, whose cell phone ends up in the liquid. This causes the Mekakushi Dan members to go shopping, to buy a new cellphone for Momo - and new cups - when suddenly the terrorists invade the department store. A plan is made and they manage to defeat the terrorists with the help of Shintaro and Ene, but Momo has to discover that her brother Shintaro was shot. |
| Kagerou Daze The episode starts with a continuation of the events in Kisaragi Attention, and shows Hibiya Amamiya, the young boy Momo had met and lost while being chased by the crowd, wondering who that strange girl was. Having bought what he was told to get at the store, Hibiya fantasizes about the possible reaction of Hiyori Asahina, his friend and crush, which he could receive for bringing her an additional gift. Upon showing her the dinosaur keychain he bought for her, Hiyori however reacts negatively and insults Hibiya for thinking she would like such a gift. The two of them talk about Konoha, a young man living with Hiyori's uncle as his foster son. Right as they talk about him sleeping for fourteen hours, Konoha enters the room, asking who they are, despite a lengthy introduction to each other the day before. While they have dinner together, a show on TV shows Momo as an idol and Hibiya recognizes her. Hiyori, as a big fan of Momo, complains that he did not get an autograph, although Hibiya had no idea that she was an idol. He then thinks back of all the trouble he went through to be able to be with Hiyori that summer, having to lie to his parents about taking summer courses in the city. The next day, Hibiya wakes up in the Kagerou Daze, where he repeatedly has to watch Hiyori die, before he ultimately sacrifices himself to save his friend, thinking it is the only way to stop the loop both of them are caught in. |
| Kaien Panzermast Following the events of the terrorist attack, Shintaro awakes and finds himself in an unfamiliar girl's room. He immediately asks Ene for an explanation, but she teases him by letting him beg for the answer. She demands that he takes off his clothes and continues begging, so Shintaro follows her orders, when all of a sudden Marry enters the room to bring him some tea. To punish him for startling Marry with this sight, he is chained to the bed, while the members of the Mekakushi Dan explain the situation to him. Shintaro is informed that he and Ene are now official members of the gang, despite him not even getting a chance to disagree. Following, the group prepares to head to the Amusement Park together, as promised to Ene for helping out with the terrorists. Shintaro, however, does not join them and instead leaves the Mekakushi Dan headquarters. On the street, he runs into Konoha, who is searching for Hiyori and Hibiya. Meanwhile, the gang is on their way to the park and talks about the origins of their group, revealing that the original founder of the group died two years ago by committing suicide. Together, they head to the grave of their founder, to introduce the new members to her. At the same time, Konoha asks Shintaro for help on his search. While he describes the looks of his two friends, he spots them being kidnapped. To prevent this, he uses his inhuman strength to fight his way to Hibiya and Hiyori, but right as they are saved, a truck threatens to crush them. In the last moment, a path to the Kagerou Daze is opened and swallows the four of them. In the meantime, the Mekakushi Dan has arrived at the grave and Ene takes a closer look at the concerned girl, only to get the shocking revelation that the founder of the gang is no other but Shintaro's deceased best friend, Ayano. |
| Headphone Actor After finding Ayano's grave, Ene tells the group about her past life. She used to be Takane Enomoto, a student in the Special Needs Class along with Haruka Kokonose. Being part of the school's culture festival, the two had to create a "special project" with help from their teacher, Kenjirou Tateyama. After debating on what to do, Takane comes up with the idea of a shooting gallery, albeit a virtual one, since they lacked funding. Named "Headphone Actor", Takane competes against one other contestant in a point-based shooting game. She won to a younger Kido with a younger Kano at her side, and had a strange encounter with a fan who called her "Ene". Takane later revealed to Haruka about her online gaming achievements. Later in the day, a younger Shintaro came and challenged her while being accompanied by Ayano. Takane lost and received flack from Shintaro. Ayano apologized for his behavior, and after some chatting, and the two became quick friends. Ayano left after telling Takane she would be attending the same school with her the following year. After the festival, Takane and Haruka received the grand prize at the Culture Festival Awards. The following year, on August 15, Takane and Haruka were seen taking summer classes with each other. After Takane leaves him for some business, Haruka is shown to have passed out. |
| Konoha no Sekai Jijou After discovering that Haruka was hospitalized for his present condition, Takane runs into Ayano at school, who tells her she needs to be more courageous and tell Haruka what she needs to tell him, leading her to realize that she loves him. Moments later however, she falls unconscious herself, and dies. She says her last words, "Haruka, I love you.", then comes in contact with the Kagerou Daze, having turned into Ene when she awakens. Back in the present, Ene finishes explaining her situation and Kano reveals that her situation is a lot like what the other Mekakushi-Dan members went through. Just then, Seto calls informs the gang about the traffic incident Shintaro became involved in. While the others go to check on him, Ene stays behind with Kano to ask him for more details, not wanting Shintaro to hear anything, since he does not know Ene and Takane are the same person, only to learn that Haruka had also died alongside Ayano. In a flashback, it is revealed that Haruka's desire to have a strong body led to a peculiar situation of his own: Konoha. |
| Losstime Memory After Momo's group catches up with him at the hospital, Shintaro tries to explain his situation as best he can. After running into Hibiya, who seems aware that the incident was no accident, Shintaro tries to get some information out of him, but he suddenly collapses. Kido, realizing that Hibiya is manifesting a power of his own, has him taken back to the hideout to recover. As Seto goes off to search for Kano, Kido explains to Shintaro and Momo how each of the Mekakushi Dan's members gained their powers after escaping from a mysterious rift which appears during near-death experiences, with Momo gaining her powers after nearly drowning, losing her father in the rift in the process. Hibiya, who had overheard that Hiyori is trapped in the rift, runs off in search for her. While Kido and Momo chase after him, Shintaro discovers a photo of Ayano whilst checking up on Marry. |
| Ayano no Koufuku Riron Kenjirou introduces Ayano to her three new adopted siblings, Kido, Kano, and Seto. The trio warn her that they are monsters and that she should stay away, but Ayano refuses to leave them alone, and plays with them. Kano tries to make Seto into a villain for their new game, on which he draws on his face. Ayano interrupts, and they all eventually mark their faces, resulting to create a group called, “The Graffiti Rangers,” for the meantime. It cuts to August 15, where the four siblings were informed of their parents' accident with a landslide while they were researching on site. Only Kenjirou makes it out alive, and the family fills up with remorse from the death of Ayaka. While she tries to make her siblings happy, Ayano accidentally stumbles upon her mother's old journal, where she learns about the Kagerou Daze and finds out that her father has a pair of red eyes as well. As Ayano studies her mother's journal again in the middle of the night, Kano enters the room. She makes him promise not to tell anyone and explains everything she found out to him. Ayano asks him to use his eye power at school to pretend to be her, while she investigates more about her father's eye ability. The duo eventually discover that Kenjirou has a sort of double personality, which his snake is trying to bring all the snakes in to the real world, as Takane and Haruka were the sacrifices. The snakes who already have physical bodies gather around the Queen Snake, who turns out to be inside Marry. Kano tells Ene about all the information he gathered, as they walked into Takane's old school. At the end of the tunnel, Kano reveals Takane's body preserved in a big, liquid-filled container. |
| Kuusou Forest A past event is shown where the medusa Azami is attacked by residents of a nearby village, who consider her a monster and thus a threat, but she fights back using her powers in order to protect her daughter, Shion. After learning from the remaining survivor that her husband, Tsukihiko, was beaten up while trying to defend her, Azami makes the painful decision to leave her family behind in order to protect them from any further harm. As time went by, Shion eventually gave birth to Marry and raised her by herself, making sure she would not leave her home. One day, when Marry steps outside, she is caught by a pair of humans who try to kidnap and make money out of her, and although Shion uses her powers to stop one of the men, she is weakened as a result. They are both killed with a blunt wooden object by the second man. As both, Marry and Shion, are dragged into the Kagerou Daze, ruled over by the Snake of Clearing Eyes, as a result of dying on August 15, Azami uses the last of her strength to pass on her role as queen to Marry, allowing her to return to the real world. Some time later, Seto hears Marry's internal cries with his own power and comes across her, deciding to become friends with her. Back in the present, Marry comes across Konoha on the street and takes him back to the hideout, deciding to become friends with him and take him to where the others are. |
| Otsukimi Recital Shintaro wakes up and recalls a tragedy that he had seen over and over in his dreams, awakening to an eye ability he always had, before taking a pair of scissors to his throat. Meanwhile, Momo and Kido catch up to Hibiya and offer to help him search for Hiyori, but are suddenly surrounded by a group of people. Elsewhere, Kano recalls how Ayano, who rejected the idea of sacrificing the other snake-wielders in order to grant her father's desire to see her mother again, confronted the snake possessing Kenjirou before jumping off the school roof and getting swallowed by the Kagerou Daze in order to prevent him achieving his goals to combine the snakes in the real world. Despite Ayano's sacrifice, the snake refuses to relinquish Kenjirou, stating that he will repeat his plans to start from scratch. Back in the present, as Momo and the others are imprisoned by their kidnappers, Momo uses her powers to attract all the Mekakushi Dan members, including Ene who has returned to her original body, to their location. Meanwhile, inside of the Kagerou Daze, Shintaro reunites with Ayano. |
| Summertime Record Kano informs the group of the situation as they make their escape, using their powers to get past all of the guards. When the group ends up getting lost, Hibiya uses his power of clairvoyance to pinpoint Kenjirou's location and they soon arrive in his lab. The snake claims that the current world was created by Marry due to her wish to be with her friends, resulting in an endless loop of the snake being revived. The snake then possesses Konoha's body, using its immense power to overwhelm Kido, Kano, and Seto, coercing Marry to take their snakes and try to begin the cycle all over again. However, the words of her friends keeps Marry from going through with it. At that moment, Shintaro and Ayano arrive and, with assistance from a previous world's Konoha, give Marry the power to swallow everything. Believing in the future over a fantasy world, Marry overcomes the snake, who is destroyed by a final wish of Konoha, before having a brief reunion with her mother. The series ends with Shintaro and Ayano in the real world and reuniting with the others. |
